Exploring Digital Identity with Dick Dekkers
In a recent episode of our podcast, hosted by Lucie MacNeill, Product Marketing Lead at Condatis, we had the privilege of welcoming Dick Dekkers, a digital identity consultant and strategic advisor. With over a decade of experience at Digidentity, working on large-scale identity services like GOV.UK Verify, Dick has now embarked on his venture, Magpie Bridges, where he addresses complex challenges in identity, biometrics, standards, and compliance.
Challenges in Government Digital Identity
Throughout his career, Dick has worked closely with governments in public-private partnerships. He highlights that one of the main challenges in government digital identity is the knowledge gap and siloed nature of government departments. Different departments, each with their own expertise—technology, regulatory bodies, and ownership—must collaborate effectively. This is particularly challenging given the increasing demand for digital services and the threats posed by external factors, such as elections and cybersecurity concerns.
Citizen Readiness for Digital Credentials
Dick believes that while many citizens are not fully aware of their existing use of digital identities, they are gradually becoming more receptive. The introduction of eIDAS 2.0, which extends digital identity to private sector use, is a significant step. People are familiar with digital wallets like Apple Wallets and Google Wallets for storing credit cards and concert tickets, and the leap to storing official documents like driving licenses or passports is not far-fetched.
Standards are crucial in ensuring interoperability and scalability in digital identity solutions. Dick emphasises that without common standards, digital identity initiatives cannot succeed. Standards like eIDAS 2.0, which cover technology and legal aspects, are essential for widespread adoption. Governments must also focus on making data available and reusable, facilitating smoother digital identity processes. The Role of Standards in Digital Transformation
Overcoming Reluctance and Adopting Innovation
Governments often show reluctance to change, partly due to the immediate demands on their attention and the challenges of reinventing existing systems. However, crises like cyber-attacks or pandemics like COVID-19 have demonstrated the urgent need for resilient digital infrastructure. These events have accelerated the adoption of digital identities and remote services.
Governments must stay engaged with industry innovations and be proactive rather than reactive to future-proof digital identity environments. By collaborating with industry leaders and staying informed about emerging technologies, governments can avoid the pitfalls of lagging behind. The ultimate goal is to create a digital identity ecosystem that is adaptable and robust enough to meet future challenges. Our conversation with Dick Dekkers shed light on the complexities and opportunities in the realm of digital identity. As governments and citizens navigate this evolving landscape, the emphasis on standards, collaboration, and proactive adoption will be vital to achieving a secure and efficient digital identity ecosystem.
