24 February 2021, Edinburgh, United Kingdom – Scottish digital identity firm, Condatis are leading the way in implementing decentralized identity technologies for businesses, making this technology a reality and no longer just a concept for organisations to consider. Working together with Digital Catapult, Condatis will be exploring decentralized identity technology using our verifiable credential passport platform to augment and expand identity management capabilities for Sellafield Ltd. This nuclear staff passport will enable Sellafield’s highly skilled staff to move between locations quickly, and provide records of essential training, certifications, and access permissions to carry out their specialised work at new sites.

Chris Tate, CEO of Condatis said:

“We are delighted at Condatis to be working with Sellafield and Digital Catapult to develop and integrate our solution based on decentralized identity, a new technology in which we are experts. The nuclear staff passport enables Sellafield’s highly skilled staff to swiftly move between locations and provide records of essential training and certifications to carry out their specialised work. We look forward to hitting the ground running with this project and support Sellafield through this new identity journey.”

With more than 11,000 employees at Sellafield Ltd and thousands of people in the supply chain, ensuring transparency of those on-site skills and training is of utmost importance. This challenge revolves around creating a skills ledger for tracking information such as radiological exposure and level of competency, training, and access. The nuclear workforce at Sellafield is highly skilled. As Sellafield’s requirements begin to change, their employees’ skills requirements are also changing, and keeping a secure and irrefutable training record is paramount. Verifiable credentials give Sellafield’s workforce control over their identity data and enable them to self-serve and move between sites using their digital wallet to provide evidence of their identity information, training records, and access clearance. The solution significantly improves time and reduces the costs of onboarding, offboarding, and staff portability across facilities, reducing the burden on HR and support teams. The staff passport is a scalable and interoperable solution that supports existing IT infrastructure and future growth.

Sellafield Ltd Chief Technology Officer, Duncan Steel, said:

“This engagement through Digital Catapult cements Sellafield’s commitment to explore and exploit cutting edge technologies in our pursuit of mission efficiency, as

well as ensuring we’re assisting new startups within the Tech sector. Growing the spread of digital within our business is key to ensuring that we maintain a fresh perspective on how our capability can keep pace with the modern world.”

Condatis will ensure trusted and verifiable personnel records are available to all relevant stakeholders within the Sellafield and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority estate will use digital technologies. The nuclear passport system guarantees a highly mobile, highly skilled, and highly secure workforce.

Dr Robert Learney, Head of Technology, Distributed Systems, at Digital Catapult, said:

“There are wide ranging benefits that distributed ledger technologies can bring to the nuclear industry from securely tracking and monitoring high value assets to ensuring the safety of the workforce on site, and we’re really excited to be partnering with Sellafield Ltd on this ground breaking project. The two startups we’ve selected are providing cutting edge solutions to help tackle real life business critical challenges, both of which can make a tangible impact on the UK’s nuclear industry.”

This is the second project based on decentralized identity project being developed by Condatis and based on the Condatis Staff Passport. A similar project is currently rolling out to Condatis and Sitekit customers in the healthcare sector. The applicability of this technology spans far beyond the nuclear industry and healthcare alone. Condatis and external partners are currently leading the way in developing and deploying decentralized identity solutions for organisations across higher education, large-scale engineering, and tourism. Decentralized identity technology has the potential to help speed up people’s movement, whether this is moving staff across different locations or assisting people in accessing physical sites safely. The technology empowers individuals by enabling them to prove their identity, qualifications, and control their data from their devices.
